On November 7th there will be an ARES Mutual Aid exercise. As there is no Lennox & Addington ARES the other local
groups will respond to a request for assistance in Napanee. It is anticipated the event will start at around 10:00 am in Napanee. Those who have indicated an interest in participating will be contacted by telephone at around 8:00am the morning of the exercise with final instructions.
Contact Doug Monk or Bill Milligan if you are able to participate. There will also be an ARES meeting at ESSROC on November 27th at 9:30 am David VE3STI spoke about several ideas for a club project. Microcontrollers/microprocessors are everywhere from our cars to our
microwave ovens to our ham radio rigs. PERC is having an "Introduction to Microprocessors" project. It will take two evenings and will involve a bit of soldering and a bit of programming in a "BASIC-like" language. When you are done, you will be able to do some simple programming and have the parts to build the 'core' (you supply the box, connectors, etc) of a simple keyer. We'll also show you how to make a thermometer that 'beeps' out the temperature in Morse code.
The cost will be $30-35. You will need a laptop (with a serial port or USB adapter) for programming and soldering equipment. You'll end up with a PICAXE 08M microcontroller, a "protoboard" (a chip programming board that has space to permanently solder up a project), a programming cable and a "breadboard" to build the various projects, all the parts you need and software on a CD. The software for programming is supposed to work on W-95 to W7 (and, for those who walk to a different drummer, there are Mac and Linux versions, though not quite as slick). I have used the software on XP and W7 without problem and also the Mac version. Members who would be interested can contact David directly ve3sti@rac.ca
